The Tatra Mountains are situated on the border between Poland and Slovakia. During winter, they offer excellent alpine climbing – snow, ice and mixed routes, followed by sharp ridges that take you to spiky summits. Descents are often tricky. There is no problem with acclimatisation as the altitude is 2000 – 2600m.
The majority of the routes, which are of varied difficulty and length, can be done in one day (starting from the hut Morskie Oko). I would like to take a group of 15 members of the Alpine Club (full or aspirants). More information about climbing in the Tatras can be found on the web site:
Dates: 3 - 11 March 2018
Location: Morskie Oko – is one of the prettiest mountain lakes in Poland. It is surrounded by mountains and there is a nice mountain hut which is a perfect starting point for climbing walking and ski touring. This is one of the few areas where climbing is allowed. There is also a possibility to move for few days to Slovakian side to do some ice climbing too.
Logistics: the nearest airport is in Krakow and there are lots of cheap flights from all major airports in the UK. Krakow which is a beautiful city with historical centre is an ideal meeting point. From there, it is about 2-hour bus journey to Zakopane. After that, 3 hour hike to the refuge at Morskie Oko. It is possible to arrange transport of bags with gear to the refuge.
