The Alpine Club, the world’s first mountaineering club, was founded in 1857.  For over 150 years, members have been at the leading edge of worldwide mountaineering development and exploration.

We are saddened to learn that Denis Mitchell died on 19th January after a prolonged illness.

A sad loss! Denis was one of just 25 british climbers in the history of British mountaineering who have climbed all 52 independent 4000m mountains of the Alps, the last despite suffering a traumatic head injury. He was a rock solid dependable alpinist who had continued to get out on the Fells of the Lake District regularly despite his cancer diagnosis up until his final year. We made many fine climbs together.
