The Alpine Club, the world’s first mountaineering club, was founded in 1857.  For over 150 years, members have been at the leading edge of worldwide mountaineering development and exploration. 

With membership, experienced and aspiring alpinists benefit from a varied meets programme, regional lectures with notable guest speakers, reduced rates at many alpine huts, opportunity to apply for grants to support expeditions, significant discounts at many UK retailers, extensive networking contacts, access to the AC Library and maps - and more! 

Becoming a Member
 

If you are attending the club’s Joint Alpine meet to Randa between the 7th & 28th July and passing through Zermatt then you may want to look out for a couple of locations that have a bit of a connection with the club.

The Monte Rosa hotel is where Whymper set out on the 13th July 1865 to climb the Matterhorn is situated in the main road and the St Peter’s Church just off the main road. 

The church contains commemorative plaques to several former members of the club.  So strong is the link to the club, that in 1925 members and friends of the Alpine Club generously paid for a new roof for the church.  The generous gesture was commemorated by the plaque. The church is currently raising funds to once again repair to the roof. 

But the 'new' roof is now itself in need of replacement and the Church is raising funds for that purpose.  It would be a fitting memorial to the many 'departed' Alpine Club members and other British mountaineers who have climbed in the surroundings of Zermatt since 1925 if we were able to help raise a significant sum to meet the current need.  Mike Baker and Henry Day (former Vice-Presidents) are co-ordinating the Club's response and can be contacted by anyone who wants to make a donation (contact details in the Club handbook.)
